100% Silk Is So Back!!!!
lately I’m just walking into vintage stores and reading the composition on cute Cavalli tops
If you’re new here, let me introduce myself: my name is Mokshaa Shivlani. I’m a Masters student at Parsons School of Design and a journalist. I spend the better part of my time chronically online, studying fashion and hunting through piles of clothes for the one unique piece that will define my wardrobe for eternity.
My latest obsession is silk. Silk makes only about 0.2% of global fiber used in the fashion and textile industry. So, you best believe it’s sought after, unconditionally loved and almost impossible to find. 100% silk was an urban myth until I started studying items like it was an extreme sport. 0.2% is a challenge to me. And I was so up for it.
Now if I was making bank and choosing to spend it on Jonathan Anderson’s Christian Dior 2026 Haute Couture, it would be less of a challenge. His 100% silk chiffon gowns are what I’d keep in my closet as collectible art but could I wear a gown on the daily? I’d be scared to. I needed cute tops, maybe a flowy skirt, scarves and summer shirts. Luxury houses are making 100% silk for a category so far beyond my everyday wear that I only wish that composition trickles down to RTW. And, for the love of it all, I will obsess over the one-of-a-kind pieces they create but don’t I deserve to own something beautiful in silk that I can actually wear?
This piece is about that hunt for 100% silk. It’s about wanting something not everyone has. And, it’s about where you can actually get it.
I’m a firm believer in the power of your local Goodwill
Now, I know that Goodwill can be overstimulating and exhausting. There’s a lot of nothing in there but there’s also hidden gems at a fraction of the cost. I live in New York so my Goodwill surprises me each time I spend a few hours in it. It’s a hunt and a rather tedious one. But, my Giorgio Armani 100% silk tie would beg to differ. It was lying there, casually, amidst a wondrously torturous section of unattractive accessories begging for me to find it. And, it was only a dollar.
That antique market you go to for furniture always has an old lady selling her most-prized possessions
I’m a Grand Bazaar and Cambridge Antique Market kind of gal. I like to work for my fashion. I like to see furniture and home decor and knick-knacks before I find the one hidden scarf at a random stall that makes the trip worth it. On one such day, I found a gorgeous vintage Pucci scarf. Just hanging there like no one knew what it was worth. And, yes it was 100% silk and $25.
Don’t give up on the vintage stores the fashion girlies swear by
There’s a reason that the tried and tested thrift stores are worth the pain of watching some cool girl find pieces you’d love. I find myself following the most fashionable girl around a vintage store because you best believe she’s in flow state and will lead me to the things I desperately want. At Beacons Closet in NYC, I found a Roberto Cavalli 100% silk top for $30. It was just there. It fit me perfectly and I wondered why no one had taken it already. But, that’s the thing about thrift stores. One woman’s trash is another woman’s treasure and boy do I suffer from thinking that every single thing is my treasure.
Depop is the holy grail!!
The girl who scrolls pinterest and substack is also the girl who scrolls depop religiously. Depop is my love language. If you’re a friend and you tell me you’re hunting for something, I will hunt for it for you and send you links. When I said I was chronically online, this is what I actually do: I lie in bed on a random Tuesday night ordering $7 lots of earrings and summer tops that are 100% silk. Depop feels surreal when your algorithm starts to understand you. Mine is trained so well that the challenge of finding 100% silk seems like a distant memory now. It gets me better than my friends do. And, I curated a list of the things I’d buy if I were still on the hunt for 100% silk. They’re all under $30!!
